Check out Sara's Candidate Profile, filmed at the Somerville Media Center!
Sara Dion is an Elementary English Learners Teacher in the Medford Public Schools. She has also been a Somerville resident and a member of the Somerville Democratic City Committee for several years, and is eager to bring an educator's perspective to the Somerville School Committee.
First and foremost, Sara is a labor-friendly candidate. Her roots are in the labor movement, having held leadership positions within her union for several years. She pledges to be a voice for Somerville educators.
As an elementary school teacher, Sara knows firsthand the vital role that education paraprofessionals play in children's lives every day. Therefore, she believes that a living wage and adequate benefits for paraprofessionals are absolutely necessary.
Sara plans to push back against the corporate-backed high-stakes testing machine. For too long, MCAS has dictated what teachers teach, taken away from meaningful learning experiences, and created a stressful learning environment for our most vulnerable students.
As we emerge from this global pandemic, prioritizing the social-emotional health of students, educators, and families is more important than ever.
At this time in our national landscape, it is crucial to view everything from an anti-racist lens. School policy and curriculum need to be actively anti-racist and work for the good of all students.
As a teacher of English Learners, the majority of Sara’s students are immigrants or come from immigrant families. She believes that it is the School Committee’s responsibility to ensure that students from immigrant and low-income families are treated with dignity and respect, and given the same opportunities as other students.
